MY CHRISTMAS CARD

A few weeks ago in Egypt I took this photograph of my god-daughter, Sabra, and her mother. Sabra is now 5 years old. I've known this poor but loving family long before Sabra was born. Sheikh Monsef, the head of the family and Sabra's grandfather, is a dear friend of mine. He and his ancestors have been the traditional keepers of the Saqqara necropolis. The family lives in quasi pharaonic conditions, and it's a real honour to be able to experience and wintness this way of life that is, sadly, disapearing fast. I chose the name 'Sabra' because it means 'The Patient One'. But Sabra is anything but patient! Like all little girls her age around the world, she loves dolls, pretty dresses and to play with her friends. And like all little girls, naturally she just 'hates' her younger brother, Ibrahim!

On behalf of Sabra and her lovely family, I wish you all a very Happy New Year. May 2004 bring some peace and harmony to this troubled world.
